Let me start by saying the thoughts and opinions posted to this blog are just that, thoughts and opinions. As the creator and moderator of this blog I can not be held responsible for actions anyone takes based on the information provided. I do hope that in the not so distant future this blog will become the host for an industry standard of the rights discussed here but, until that time this is simply information.
Below you will find some examples of actual rights statements/certificates I have received with a note as to the type of rights MRR or PLR they were advertised as. I will also make note of what I think the problem is with each example.
MRR or Master Resell Rights
- [YES] Can be given away
- [YES] Can be packaged with other products
- [YES] Can be offered as a bonus
- [YES] Can be edited completely and your name put on it
- [YES] Can be used as web content
- [YES] Can be broken down into smaller articles
- [YES] Can be added to an e-course or autoresponder
- [YES] Can be added to membership sites
- [YES] Can sell Resale Rights
- [YES] Can sell Master Resale Rights
- [YES] Can be offered through auction sites
The only problem I see with the above example is it actually seems to be PLR not MRR. The reason I say this is because of the line I made bold. They give you permission to edit the product and place your name on it. In my opinion that makes this a PLR product not a MRR product.
You have FULL Master Resell Rights to this product
- Can be given away for FREE
- Can be sold at any price you want to
- Can sell the books individually or in a package
- Can offer MRR to your customers
- Can be packaged
- Can be offered as a bonus
- Can be sold on auction sites
In short, you can do almost anything with this product except editing/modifying
- Cannot offer Branding rights to your customers
- Cannot be edited/modified
This seems to fit MRR pretty much as I describe it. I think that goes to show not everyone is confused on the issue. The only thing is I am not sure what the difference is between regular MRR and full MRR. I figure MRR is MRR.
Private Label Rights
- YES Sell Private Label Rights
- NO Claim Full Copyright
- YES Sell Master Resale Rights
- YES Edit/Alter the Sales Materials
- YES Added to Paid Membership Sites
- NO Added to Free Membership Sites
- YES Can be Broken Down Into Articles
- YES Can be Packaged with Other Products
- YES Sell at Auction Sites
- YES Offered Through Dime Sale Events
- YES Offered as Free Bonus
- NO Given Away for Free
In my opinion this is an example of MRR being advertised as PLR. They even tell you it is OK to resell PLR but they restrict you from modifying the product and placing your name on it as author. These restrictions may apply to PLR, in my opinion, if the 3 items marked as NO are modified slightly. If they noted these thing could not be done UNLESS the product is modified and you put your name on it as author.
Private Label Rights
- You CAN edit all of the material included in the package
- You CAN sell all of the material in the package
- You CAN split up the content of the ebook (into articles, blog posts)
- You CAN giveaway this package with personal use rights only
- You CAN sell personal use rights to this package
- You CAN sell standard resell rights to this package
- You CAN sell master resell rights to this package
- You CAN NOT giveaway any rights to this package for free (rights must be sold)
- You CAN NOT distribute private label rights to this package in any way (free or paid)
The only thing I see wrong with the above example is they do not mention allowing you to claim copyright and/or authorship to the product. I believe it is implied since they say you can edit all of the material in the package but it is not mentioned.
This product is being sold with Giveaway Rights, Resell Rights, MRR and PLR
- Can be sold on auction sites
- Can claim authorship
- Can be bundled with other products
- Can be added to paid membership site
- Can be added to a free membership site
- Can be added as a bonus to a paid product
- Can be added as a bonus to a free product
- Cannot claim copyright
- Includes source files
- Includes graphics
This is almost right. If you can claim authorship why do they say you can not claim copyright? I am thinking the reason they are not allowing you to claim copyright is due to the fact they did say you could edit or completely edit the product. I find this rather strange since they include the source file so you can edit it. They do not mind you saying you wrote it as long as they keep the copyright. As I said earlier if the product is edited I would not want my name left on it as author or copyright holder. Also, if you do not edit the product why would you put you name on it as author. Last but not least if you edit the product enough to call it your own how would they maintain copyright anyway?
Final example:
Private Label Rights, Terms & Conditions
- [YES] Can be edited
- [YES] Can put your name as the author
- [YES] Can be broken down into articles
- [YES] Can be used as web or e-zine content
- [YES] Can be added into membership sites
- [YES] Can be sold in any format
- [YES] Can be packaged
- [YES] Can be offered as a bonus
- [YES] Can be given away (in any format)
- [YES] Can be sold on auction sites
- [YES] Can offer (Master) Resell Rights
- [YES] Can resell Private Label Rights
- [YES] Can be published offline
In short, you can do literally anything you want with this product.
I could not have done this any better myself. I believe this statement hits the PLR nail right on the head. If you buy the PLR product it belongs to you.
My final note for this post concerns source files. I believe anyone selling PLR should include source files in the package. Although I, and others of you, I’m sure, know how to revert a PDF file back to a .doc file not everyone does and not everyone owns the paid version of Adobe Acrobat. Without that knowledge or product (or at least one like it) it is impossible to edit the PDF file.
My next post to this blog will lay out exactly what I believe these rights SHOULD be. I will also include some rights statements/certificates I have received when purchasing products that support my understanding and opinions.
There are several posts over at my personal blog about using PLR to start and build your business. Click Here to read them as they are posted.
